DriveAware

Role: User Experience Designer, Lead Researcher, UI Design
Duration: 7 days

Back when I was in high school a few friends of mine were involved in a high speed crash that left their car flipped over, all occupants severely injured and one in a coma. Speeding is not something that just happens, it is a habit that is formed. By leveraging advanced data tracking and analysis, DriveAware offers real-time updates and comprehensive reports on your child's driving habits. From speed monitoring to sudden braking events, the app provides a detailed overview of their driving performance, highlighting areas for improvement and reinforcing safe practices.

The Problem

Many parents are concerned about their teenage children’s driving habits but lack the tools to monitor and guide them effectively. Traditional methods of ensuring safe driving often involve direct supervision, which is not always feasible or sufficient. How can I offer a solution that provides real-time insights and actionable feedback on driving behavior to help young drivers improve their skills and stay safe on the road?

The Goal

The primary goal of DriveAware is to enhance the safety and responsibility of young drivers by providing parents with real-time updates on their child's driving behavior. The app offers detailed reports and analysis of driving patterns, including speed monitoring and sudden braking events.

To gather this information surveys where conducted of parents with new drivers. These surveys where handed out to 112 parents leaving the MVA with children around driving age.

Discovery & Research

User Interviews

Through survey research, it's clear that parents have a lot of concerns when their child begins driving on their own. Safety concerns are the most prevalent, with 53% of parents responding as that being their biggest concern. How can we ease the worry of these parent's and create a product to help them better monitor and correct driving habits?

Research Findings

Considering our users' need for on-the-go access and viewing capabilities, I aimed to simplify the experience. Recognizing the busy lives of parents, I envisioned a solution that puts all the necessary information right on their wrist.

Identifying the Problem

Goal

Real-Time Monitoring: provide accurate and timely updates on a child's driving behavior.

Goal

Customizable Alerts:

for excessive speed, accident reports and harsh braking

Goal

User-Friendly Interface:  allows parents to easily navigate through driving reports and understand the information presented

DriceAware is dedicated to enhancing the connection between parents and young drivers through real-time updates, comprehensive data analysis, and personalized feedback. By fostering open communication and continuous improvement, we strive to create a driving experience that prioritizes safety, responsibility, and confidence on the road.

Achieve the Goals

Creating the base of user flows for the DriveAware smartwatch platform presented a unique set of challenges. I conducted research on smart watch user behaviors, focusing on how to present data in the most accessible and concise manner.

Ideation & Design

Key User Flows

I started by brainstorming and outlining key functionalities, ensuring they align with the app’s mission to enhance driving safety. Throughout this process, I emphasize clarity and usability, ensuring each element serves a purpose and contributes to a seamless user experience.

Sketches & Wireframes

During this phase, a mother of twin girls raised a concern about tracking both her daughters, which led to the identification of a new feature requirement: the ability to switch between multiple children. I incorporated the multi-child tracking feature, ensuring the app could seamlessly switch between profiles.

Overview

My experience with the DriveAware project has been incredibly rewarding and educational. Utilizing surveys provided valuable insights that were instrumental in structuring and refining the app based on real user needs and concerns. I leaned the needs for clear survey structure and how taking this time could positively impact the creation of a product. Designing for a smaller platform, such as smart watches, presented unique challenges that required extensive research and adaptation to ensure a seamless user experience.

These challenges pushed me to think creatively and consider different user interactions and interface elements. Overall, the journey from initial concept to a refined application taught me the importance of user feedback, thorough research, and adaptability in design. This experience has not only enhanced my skills but also reinforced my passion for creating user-centered solutions that promote safety and responsibility.

The Future

In the future of DriveAware's design, I would like to delve deeper into the integration of smart watch UIs, enhancing my understanding of watch flows and how users interact with these devices. By exploring the unique capabilities and constraints of smart watches, we can create a more seamless and intuitive user experience for parents and young drivers. Revisiting and conducting thorough competitor analyses will be essential, as it will allow us to stay informed about industry trends and innovations, helping us to identify opportunities for improvement and differentiation. By continuously refining our approach, we can ensure DriveAware remains a cutting-edge solution in promoting safe and responsible driving.
